TIANJIN, China, March 23 (UPI) -- A fifth infant who contracted an infection in a northern Chinese hospital has died, officials said.
The death Sunday of the newborn at Jixian County Maternal and Child Care Service Center in Tianjin moved the death toll from the outbreak to five babies, Xinhua, the state-run Chinese news agency, reported.
Six newborns developed respiratory problems starting March 18, with five of them dying and the sixth infant undergoing treatment, a Tianjin Health Department spokesman said.
Officials said an initial investigation has revealed the deaths were caused by a hospital-acquired infection of the Enterobacter cloacae bacterium.
